Penfolds Grange 1986
The Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 1986 is a truly exceptional vintage that showcases the best of Australian winemaking with few if any peers.
On the nose, it offers a powerful and intense aroma of mocha, cedar and liquorice which is perfectly balanced with smoky oak characters. The palate is rich and extravagant, with complex flavours of mocha, dark chocolate, dark berry and herb fruit, all complemented by dense and ripe tannins. The finish is chalky firm, but superbly long and flavourful.
This wine is a legendary Grange that is still on the ascendancy, and it has rightfully earned place alongside 1971 and 1976 as one of the very small handful of Granges on the top podium of its class. And every year that goes by it gets better and more scarce.
As Australia's most famous wine, Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz is known for its superb fruit complexity and flavour richness. This wine is exquisitely perfumed and concentrated, combining the intensely rich fruit and ripe tannins of Shiraz with the fragrance and complementary nuances of new, fine-grained American oak. In some years, a portion of Cabernet Sauvignon is added to enhance the aromatics and palate structure. Overall, the Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 1986 is a truly remarkable wine.
Blackberry liqueur, pepper, earth, spice and leaf aromas produce a pungent perfume, This wine is huge. It's packed and stacked with layers of intense, ripe dark fruit. This is full boded, powerful and finishes with wave after wave of dense, packed and staked fruit. This is about power, purity and intensity, not elegance. That being said, it's a world class wine with remarkable character and an endless finish. - Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider, Points 99/100
